Keep safe on the roads this Christmas

With the wet weather conditions and increased traffic on the roads expected at Christmas, it is important to take extra care on the roads. Here are a few tips which will help make your journey safer:

  • Check your tyres are properly inflated and have sufficient tread depth.
  • Check your headlights are working and you have a full tank of petrol, so you can avoid getting stranded.
  • Take along an emergency kit, including a blanket, water, high energy snacks, a torch, basic tool kit, first aid kit, jump leads and a tow rope.
  • Make sure your windscreen is fully de-iced before you set off.
  • Drive safely this Christmas to avoid starting the New Year with a car insurance claim.

    We are an impatient nation

swiftcover.com found that many people become impatient on the road and nearly one in ten men admit that their impatience has caused them to have an accident. 37% of people said they are more impatient now than they were three years ago, which has not only caused problems on the road but also at work and home. There are a number of factors which contribute towards drivers becoming impatient, such as tailgating, or when other drivers talk on their mobile phones.

Men were found to have the least patience with nearly 62% of male drivers confessing to swearing and gesturing to other road users, compared to 47% of women. The rudest age group are those between the ages of 45 to 54 with 53% saying they have made rude gestures or sworn while driving. Regionally drivers in the South West were found to be the rudest with 60% admitting to being rude, and London was found to be the most polite area with only 38% of people admitting to being impolite. 5% of people have taken up yoga to improve their patience and 11% have resolved to be nicer to others.

It is important to stay patient on the road, as impatience could lead to an accident which could push up your car insurance premium. To help ease the stress you could organise school lift clubs, car sharing or you could leave a little earlier in the morning to avoid the traffic.

    Automotive gifts

If you know someone who is a car lover, you may want to buy an automotive gift for them this Christmas.

A personalised registration plate would make a great gift. Car insurance provider, swiftcover.com recently found that despite motoring costs increasing, people are still buying personalised number plates as they add to the enjoyment of motoring.

There are also many gadgets and accessories to choose from, such as a car torch or a car boot organiser, or how about a car magazine subscription or a driving experience? Have a look at www.meandmycar.co.uk and www.gifts.com for some more automotive gift ideas.

It’s probably best to avoid buying furry dice and car stickers, after swiftcover.com discovered that people who have these in their cars are more likely to have road rage.

  • Christmas shopping on foot or online

The countdown to Christmas has begun and with that comes the rush to buy Christmas presents. However, going to a shopping mall at this time of year can be a rather stressful experience, and the excitement of buying gifts often fades as you see the crowds.

With long queues, and pushing and shoving it’s no surprise that more people are deciding to buy their Christmas gifts online. With no hassle and less fuss it often proves the easier option, and you can buy them wherever and whenever you want to.

According to Sky News, it was predicted that yesterday would be the busiest day of the year for internet shopping. It was the first Monday before the start of December and many online stores saw a rise in sales as people started their Christmas shopping. They also said that this year 69% of consumers will do some of their Christmas shopping online.

Buying online can save you a lot of time and money. From buying your Christmas gifts through to buying your essential, but not as exciting, household and car insurance policies. Nowadays it’s easy to compare prices and find the best deals, and it is almost a stress free experience.
