Slumdog children get new homes

slumdog-star-picture-from-the-bbc-website.jpg

Sunday night saw the
81st Annual Academy Awards and it was full of the usual glitz and glamour.

There were some fantastic dresses and some very dapper men. It was 6th time lucky for Kate Winslet as she finally won an Oscar for Best Actress, Best Actor was Sean Penn, Best Supporting Actor was the late Heath Ledger and the Best Supporting Actress went to Penelope Cruz. The biggest winner of the night has to go to the film Slumdog Millionaire which scooped a massive 8 Oscars making it the most successful British film in a decade. Probably one of the best things to come from this years Oscars is that two of the child actors from this film are being bought new homes for them and their families. There was outcry when it emerged that these children were still living in slums despite the millions of pounds being taken for the film at the box office.

Best films of 2008

2008 is coming to a close and there have been 965 movies released to date. But which ones did we like and which ones did we hate.

The Times have collated their top 100 best films of 2008. Their top 5 are:

The Dark Knight
Gomorrah
Man On Wire
There Will Be Blood
Time and Winds

When the new Batman film, The Dark Knight, was released in July 2008 it broke box office records on its first weekend in the US cinemas. The BBC website reported that it made 155 million dollars in US cinemas, surpassing a record set last year by Spiderman 3. The film received mixed reviews with some people loving it and praising the performance of Heath Ledger as The Joker who sadly died in January 2008, but others found it a bit too dark and serious. I personally loved it and The Joker stole the show for me.

So what were your top movies of 2008? Did they make you laugh, cry or just entertain you?
