The Stuck Man’s Marathon

On Sunday 23rd May thousands of runners gathered at the starting line, ready to run the 2010 Edinburgh Marathon. Many of the entrants ran for charity, raising millions for a number of good causes. Included in the crowd of more than 9000 runners, was the purple and orange stuck man, who took part in the race with a fantastic finish time of 3:49:09. The stuck man was promoting swiftcover.com’s recently launched iphone application called stuck. Stuck allows users to post twitter-style comments when they are stuck, whether they have a song stuck in their head, stuck in traffic or …stuck behind a slow person in a race. Other races on the day included the Scottish half marathon and the Hairy Haggis team relay. The crowd of spectators, the runners, and all the people organising the event made the day a great experience for everyone.

If you fancy entering the race next year then keep an eye out on the 1st September when entries will be open to the public.

Flooding causes road chaos

Flooding has caused chaos on the roads as torrential rain has hit some parts of the UK, and the rainy weather is set to continue over the weekend.

The environmental agency has put 27 flood warnings in place, and severe gales may also accompany the rain.

With these warnings in place it is important not to drive unless essential, as driving conditions are treacherous and many roads are closed. However if you do decide to drive in these conditions then keep this advice in mind:

• Lower your speed
• Leave a longer gap between yourself and other traffic
• Watch out for any shiny patches as they could be puddles of water
• Be alert and ready to slow down if needed

If you are planning a journey this weekend remember these tips and ensure you have adequate car insurance cover. Click on the article link below for more advice on flooding and for information about road closures.

Indoor and out - things to do on a wet weekend

It’s going rain this bank holiday weekend. Or be sunny. Or perhaps something in between. Apparently. For many this is the last weekend of the summer before the kids go back to school, and all your colleagues show up again at work. So what can you do on a wet weekend. Here’s what the Telegraph have come up last week  - mostly family-oriented ideas, though one of them - going for a swim in an outdoor pool - will probably win few votes from parents!

For those of you more inclined to hide away and embark on a catch-up of some good films here is the list of the Top 250 films of all time from the IMDB (Internet Movie Database) website, the ‘biggest, best and most award-winning movie-site on the planet. To my shame, I haven’t seen the all-time number one or number three but I am glad to see Pulp Fiction, The Usual Suspects and Memento in the Top 30, three masterpieces that absolutely stunned me when I saw them at the cinema when they came out. Though these do all have some violence in them, I still think I am too squeamish to watch the numero uno on the list. Maybe I’ll take the plunge this weekend. Not in the outdoor pool, but watching ‘officially’ the best film of all time!
