Would you park your car HERE?

September 14th, 2007

A friend sent me this picture - and the following message - both of which he had been sent in turn by his wife from her work where she had been sent it by someone else…Read on, but suspend disbelief as you do…

The message which came with it, which appears to contain someone else’s earlier email exchange - said:

>This is pretty amazing! Can you imagine how all this operates? How do they lock each car in its cubicle for safety.

>WHO CARES. NO ONE IN THEIR RIGHT MIND COULD GET IN THERE.

>Talk about German efficiency! The two photos were taken at a new parking garage in Munich. The actual space that the facility occupies is approximately only 20% of a comparable facility with the traditional design that is used primarily in the US. Not only is the German structure less expensive to build, but vehicles are also “retrieved” in less time and without the potential of being damaged by an attendant.

Now, I have no idea if this is for real or just some form of clever digital photo manipulation. I suspect the latter if only because the cars all look too new! If you know any better, please do let me know!

I’m not entirely sure that’s real either - How many levels are there, it’s a long way down from the top!!

Considering they are all unregistered VW’s my guess is its a storage facility in Wolfsburg at their giant factory. Pretty cool huh? There are plenty of automatic car parks in Japan so I don’t think its a hoax.

this is very interesting but i am not too sure about this idea because its due to cars falling off and making some SERIOUS damage to the other facilities…. but as it has been shown, not to bad so i suppose that this should be built all over the UK as well not only in 1 country. now i am off to my next mission which is making a plane in the water thank you friend.

This is indeed real i saw it on the discovery channel the customer orders a car and the machine picks it up and brings it down for an attendant to drive up to the customer.

I’m not so sure if it’s that efficient though. A lot of people park at the same time, so wouldn’t there be a queue for the machine to come back?

It’s absolutely real, though it’s not a normal carpark. This is in Wolfsburg at the Volkswagen factory. There are two of these towers there in which new cars are stored for customers who want to pick up their new car straight from the factory. Search for “volkswagen glass tower” on youtube and you’ll find several videos of it.
